Schools preparing for strike action

Careers Education
Schools in England and Wales are bracing themselves for short-notice closures if a strike by the National Union of Teachers on 24 April goes ahead.

The union wants a larger pay rise for 2008 than the 2.45 per cent offered by the government. It argues that the rise should be at least the retail price index measure of inflation, which is currently 4.1 per cent. However, the government uses a different measure of inflation - the consumer price index - which puts the rate at 2.5 per cent.

Conservative councillor Marion Clayton, lead member for achievement and learning at Buckinghamshire Council, said: "Many schools will have to decide whether to close with very little notice, possibly 48 hours."
