School attendance: Report praises sport programme

An independent report last week declared a Youth Sport Trust and BSkyB initiative that uses sport to help children with poor attendance and challenging behaviour a success.

Academics at Loughborough University monitored the Department forEducation and Skills-backed initiative, called Living for Sport, sinceits launch three years ago.

The researchers' latest report found the initiative helped improveattitudes towards staff for three quarters of children taking part.

Seven out of 10 pupils showed improved behaviour and increasedself-confidence.

The initiative involves sports courses designed around pupils' needs,lasting between a term and a school year.
