The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched a consultation on 12 June. This outlines proposed changes that claim to make the admissions process for parents as fair, transparent and straightforward as possible.
Under the proposals, parents will be able to apply to the local authority where they live instead of the local authority where the school is located. Parents will be able to apply to at least three primary schools - at the moment, in some areas parents are only allowed to apply for one primary school. All admission authorities will be required to maintain waiting lists when oversubscribed. The government also wants to make it easier for popular and successful schools to expand.
