Hundreds of schools across England now have their own police officers as part of safer schools partnerships. Tom de Castella visits Essex to find out what this means for young people inside and outside the school gates.

Smith is part of a new breed of school-based police officers who work alongside students and staff as part of an initiative called safer schools partnerships. Under the scheme, the officers go into schools and help tackle problems such as bullying and truancy.

Calming presence

Tabor seems to be a fairly calm place without serious outbreaks of bad behaviour. But the pupils still point to bullying, particularly name-calling, as the most common problem. They say that teachers are not always good at tackling bullying, but Smith is independent, trustworthy, and has the clout to get results. "She's someone we can talk to," says one pupil.
