The research by the university criticised youth centres for not presenting positive images of gay and lesbian people. Research officer Shelby Wigmore said: "Take posters in some youth centres, for example, often they are too heterosexually focused. This increases the sense of isolation felt by young gay and lesbian people, which is particularly prevalent in rural areas."
The study also said too many schools are failing to offer gay and lesbian pupils support with sexual health and bullying.
The university is part of the Sussex Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Unsure Training and Development Research Partnership. Other members include the Trust for the Study of Adolescence.
