When it opens in March, the two-bed refuge, run by the charitySafe@Last, will be the only English refuge of its kind outside London.It will bring the total number of children's refuge beds in the UK tonine with four in London and a three-bed place in Scotland.
The facility will provide supervised accommodation for children who willbe able to refer themselves through a helpline. Funding to refurbish arun-down property and employ a manager for three years came from theRailway Children charity. Property services firm the Horbury Group hasworked on the building's revamp for free.
Andy McCullough, Railway Children's national strategy and policy adviserfor the UK, said: "The reason we wanted to invest in this model isbecause we think they have gone about it in the right way and reallyengaged with the local authority, police and social services."
