By extending the survey the government hopes to get to grips with young people's experiences of crime.
"Young people remain more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators," Smith said.
"Extending the survey will help us understand how crime affects young people and do even more to prevent it."
Research from the Design Council, on behalf of the Home Office, found that one in eight young people in England had been the victim of "hot product" theft, where they have had items such as new mobile phones, iPods or MP3 players stolen.
The government is due to publish its youth crime strategy later this summer.
