The poll by the Shared Care Network charity found short breaks can help autistic children and young people develop new skills and make friends.
More than half of parents surveyed said getting short breaks helped their autistic child make friends, 92 per cent said it helped them gain social skills and more than three quarters said it made their child happier.
Candy Smith, chief executive of Shared Care Network, called for more carers to come forward. "The challenge is to recruit short break carers and professionals in the numbers needed," she said.
