THE CHALLENGE

The Youth Justice Board's resettlement strategy Youth Resettlement: A framework for action stresses the importance of enabling young people and their families to participate in the resettlement process.

Gemma Buckland, senior policy officer at the Rainer-led partnership Reset, says: "We've spoken to many young people who tell us they feel resettlement is done 'to them' and not 'with them'."

THE SOLUTION

Reset staff identified the need for a tool for practitioners to enable them to help young people become more active participants in the resettlement process.

Following consultation with young people from Rochdale Youth Offending Team, Warren Hill Young Offender Institution and the Sir Evelyn Unit for females at HMP Cookham Wood, the partnership unveiled a young people's checklist, which is available free for youth offending teams and institutions.
