The challenge
Youth Matters proposes a set of national standards underpinning the activities on offer to young people in a local area. This includes access to cultural activities, presenting a challenge to youth organisations. How can they work with museums and libraries to make their activities accessible and attractive to young people?
The solution
Leon Mexter, chief executive of the North East Regional Youth Work Unit, started considering this question during discussions with North East Museums Libraries and Archives Council, now MLA North East, in 2002.
This led to both organisations bidding for funding to employ a youth worker for a year in two Newcastle libraries, which developed a range of projects to entice more young people in.
