The UK Government argues that Zimbabwe is in the middle of a political and humanitarian crisis. Millions are facing possible famine. Human rights abuses against the pro-democracy opponents of the government are well documented. To play cricket as if nothing is happening is to give credibility to the regime of Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe.
The England and Wales Cricket Board says it cannot get involved in politics.
It doubts whether cancelling one match will make a bit of difference to President Mugabe. Most important, it says it cannot afford to withdraw from the fixtures. The financial sting is that if it cancels the matches it may be sued or fined. It says that could cost up to 1 million.
