RESOURCES: Talking point - Should under-18s be paid the minimumwage?

1 min read

The Low Pay Commission has agreed that there is a case for a guaranteed minimum wage for 16- and 17-year-olds. This would make it illegal for an employer to pay less than a nationally agreed hourly rate.

Talk to young people about the idea of a minimum wage. The TUC says that some young people are paid as little as 1.80 an hour for a 38-hour working week. Is it right that such badly paid young people should have an increase?

Talk about the possible drawbacks. Might some lose their jobs if their employer cannot afford the increase?

Why should governments tell people how much they have to earn? If young people know what the wage rate is before they take the job, shouldn't it be their choice?
