Education should allow everyone to make real choices during their lives.

But there is still a long way to go before girls and women are able to take full advantage of their potential in our society. So said David Bell, chief inspector of schools, in a major speech.

Is he right? Is there a reason why girls do well at school but don't get the rewards of such well-paid jobs at the end?

Is it because society values certain things more than exam success? Does being confident and pushy mean you get on better than if you are simply knowledgeable and hard working?
