The backdrop to the study was a variety of high-profile international events that took place during the 1990s in relation to children's rights, gender equality, environmental protection and social development.
The book's editor, Louise Chawla, has drawn together the work of national teams that researched the relationship between children and their local environment in neighbourhoods in Argentina, the UK, Australia, South Africa, India, Norway, the US and Poland.
Findings from these eight national studies are further compared with a similar four-nation study that took place in the 1970s in order to produce cross-national recommendations about those factors that make for environments that are good places in which to grow up.
