Resources: Review - An international study of foster care

1 min read
In 1997, Matthew Colton and Margaret Williams edited a much-welcomed international reference book on foster care. Nearly 10 years later, this new volume provides a rare opportunity for cross-national comparison of different foster care systems, trends and issues.

This book focuses on a smaller number of countries. Ten nations arefeatured: Argentina; China; France; India; Japan; Poland; South Africa;Sweden; the UK; and the US. These 10 represent very differentgeographical, political and child welfare systems. For example, thereare countries like China and Argentina, where foster care is relativelynew, and others where it is far more well-established like Sweden andJapan.

Local experts from each of the countries were asked to write chaptersproviding a description of their own system of foster care and then tocomment on current trends and debates. This approach works well andmeans there is interesting information about individual systems as wellas plenty of comparable material.
