In contrast, the role of counselling for young people has long been acknowledged in Australia. The Geldards have contributed to this in their writing, their practice and through their work running training courses in counselling skills. Counselling Adolescents first appeared in 1999, and has been reprinted every year since then, sometimes twice - evidence of a much-used and seminal text. This year sees a new edition with two new chapters: "Making use of adolescent communication processes" and "Promoting change in adolescents".
The book proposes a different approach to the principles and practices required for counselling adults and children. The Geldards say that, in order to help adolescents effectively, you need to understand adolescent developmental processes. The counselling approach that comes from this understanding enables the counsellor to join the young person "to achieve a mutually beneficial working relationship".
