The foreword states: "The issue of parental drug and alcohol misuse has moved from being a relatively rare occurrence in social work practice to almost an everyday dilemma." However, I would suggest that it is the realisation of the factors involved that has increased significantly, rather than the issue itself.
The book is very readable and benefits from a wide variety of styles and views. The central message is that it is risky to make a family placement for a child without considering the part that substance misuse might have played in their lives.
The introductory article on the effects of psychoactive drugs not only gives a good overview but makes taking drugs sound highly unattractive. It would be useful for prevention practitioners.
