Drug and alcohol misuse is a constantly changing animal. The substances change. The way people use them change. And as anyone who's followed patterns of behaviour in the past few years will know - what with things like online purchasing, and the rapid emergence of all kinds of new drugs - any support we're able to offer has to take in a wide, complex and evolving context.

With this in mind, Tony White's book is a good, entry-level read for anyone interested in this fascinating, labyrinthine subject. His book is full of good sense, and White communicates practical and technical detail well, even to the lay reader. It's hard to think of anyone who won't come away without an understanding of approaches such as transactional analysis and cognitive behavioural therapy, as well as a fair overview on addiction and treatment.
