Beyond Fear and Control: Working with young people who self-harm. Edited by: Helen Spandler and Sam Warner Published by: PCCS Books Price: 16 ISBN 978 1 898 05987 5
This is the most refreshing book on self-harm that I have read for a long time. Billed as "a 42nd Street reader", it draws on learning from the well-known Manchester mental health project and aims to move services "away from responses based on fear" and towards a more young person-centred approach.
I found it bursting with openness, honesty and integrity from the start. I know I will use this book for inspiration and support time and time again. I really admire and respect the value base from which it works. The accounts from service users give valuable honesty and insight into their world. The stories are immensely moving and beautifully written, in particular the pieces by Claire Shaw and Terri Shaw.
