Smart Thinking By Don Rowe and Amanda Dickson Published by Russell House Publishing Price: 29.95 ISBN 1 903 85597 7

Smart Thinking is a programme intended primarily for use with young offenders, and those at risk of offending, in secure or community settings. It contains resource materials for 10 group-work sessions. In the introduction, the authors carefully explain the aim of the programme: to encourage young people to develop their thinking skills, particularly in relation to social and moral aspects of offending behaviour. However, they stress that the actual materials are not intended as a way of eliciting the "right" responses, but rather to encourage the kind of thinking that moves from being selfcentred towards that which gives consideration to others. The programme also aims to try to develop young people's ability to empathise with others.
