Addictive behaviour guru Dr Mark Griffiths, of Nottingham Trent University, uses a six-point test to help identify addicts. Is the behaviour the most important thing in the person's life? Have they built up tolerance, needing more to get the same effect? Is it used to change mood, either to get a buzz or a high or to escape from worries? Do they get withdrawal symptoms if they don't do it? Does it cause conflicts? Finally, is the person prone to relapses, managing to give it up but then going back to it?
