1. There is a lot of scepticism around team building. The idea of a naval-gazing day out can sound like an irritation for busy people who regularly work longer than their agreed hours and are juggling too many things.
Yet team-building events are known to work. The corporate sector wouldn't have fallen for them in a big way if they were a complete waste of time.
2. Be clear about what you want to achieve that is right for your team.
There is no one-size-fits-all blueprint for a successful event. Do you want mainly fun, to help people get to know each other and to reward good work? Are there specific operational or relationship problems you want to work on? Has the team been through a reorganisation and needs to take stock and a chance to refocus? All of these, and more, in any combination, are good reasons to hold a team-building day. Just make sure your facilitators have understood what you need and devised activities to achieve it.
