Self-harm is a strange phenomenon that is a big part of many young people's lives. Find out more with the quick guide.

1. Self-harm is more common than many people realise. Because it is often done secretly, even careful research may underestimate the extent of it. A study last year found that more than one in 10 young people had deliberately harmed themselves. It is much more common among young women than young men. Those who self-harm tend to be more anxious and have lower self-esteem than those who do not.

2. It has many names and many forms. Deliberate self-harm can include cutting arms with blades, poisoning, punching, burning skin, headbanging, hair pulling, breaking bones and gnawing at flesh.
