1 There are many reasons why young people want to set themselves up in their own place. Some are intuitive and impulsive. Some hard-headed and rational. No-one can predict how it will work out for any individual.

But thinking about the reasons in advance can help young people keep a level head when the going gets tough, and make good choices about when and where they move. A good exercise is simply to brainstorm the reasons for leaving home, then rate them. Which are good? Which are problematic?

2 Young people's housing wish lists often consist of one-bedroom furnished flats or houses. How easy are these to rent in your area, and at what price? Take a trip round local housing agents and find out. If young people have plans to move to a big city thinking that will be easier, do the same there. The internet can help. Talk about the reality for many young people of shared rooms and hostels.
