What is fair trade? And why does it only last a fortnight? Find out with the guaranteed, non-exploitative quick guide.
1. Fair trade is all about giving producers, generally in the developing world, a reasonable and guaranteed return. Coffee growers and fruit farmers might be efficient and hard-working producers. But if they are left to the whim of aggressive markets they find it hard to maintain a living. Sudden fluctuations in price can put them out of business. Fair trade producers receive a price that covers the cost of production and a premium invested in the local community.
2. Fairtrade Fortnight is a publicity event set up by the Fairtrade Foundation, the body that administers the Fairtrade Mark. It registers producers, and promotes the brands. Over the next couple of weeks it is chivvying everyone along to change their spending behaviour to the advantage of poor countries. The foundation has set rival towns against each other, vying to be the first to declare fair trade status. Think global; fight local.
