1. Massive amounts of histamine and other powerful chemicals suddenly flood the body. Blood vessels widen, which causes a sudden and severe lowering of blood pressure. The airways of the lungs become constricted. This is what is known as anaphylactic shock, or severe allergic reaction. The body's immune system has gone into overdrive and this becomes life threatening. The trigger, known as an allergen, can be an everyday and usually harmless substance, such as a peanut or contact with a latex glove.
