Many may have seen the excellent documentary film version, but for those who haven't, Touching the Void recounts the climb by two young friends of an unconquered route up an Andean peak. They get to the top but things go very wrong on the way down. Joe Simpson, the author of this tome, falls and smashes his leg - his partner Simon Yates heroically lowers him down by rope until Joe goes over a ledge and is left hanging. Simon is left 300ft above with a taut rope that is trying to pull him off the mountain face. His options are to die with Joe or cut the rope. He cuts the rope.
