Resources: Classic text revisited... Blood, Sweat and Tears StellaDadzie, 1997

This helped bring a focus to meeting the needs of Black young people, but if an airy-fairy multiculturalism was failing Black young people, it also failed to tackle White racism.

This book traces the story of a detached project that went out onto the streets of Bermondsey, south London, to make contact with White young people who were vulnerable to the recruiters of the far right and at risk of becoming involved in racist violence. The Bede Detached Project was funded through a Youth Work Development Grant. This funding enabled the involvement of an independent consultant who was able to provide support and training, but also to help record and evaluate the work. Hence we have this book - a comprehensive account of the three-year project detailing the setting up of the multiracial staff team, the establishment of objectives and success criteria, the "blood, sweat and tears" of street work and the evaluation of outcomes.
