SUMMARY

The term "head teacher" is defined in law but there is no legal definition for the term "executive head teacher" (EHT) and there is no comprehensive guidance on the set of skills needed for the role. The researchers behind this study wanted to find out how executive heads - which they define as the strategic leader of more than one school or someone with equivalent responsibility - are appointed and deployed in practice, with a view to establishing greater consensus around the EHT role.
