SUMMARY
While local authorities have statutory thresholds to indicate when action needs to be taken to protect a child from severe neglect, the threshold for early intervention in less serious neglect cases is nebulous. Researchers from nine local authorities, supported by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) and Research in Practice (RIP), wanted to find out how local authorities can identify child neglect at an early stage, and pinpoint effective, low-cost interventions, particularly drawing on the local community. They carried out 271 interviews with parents, practitioners, young people and community representatives, online and face-to-face for the study - Child Neglect is Everyone's Business: Achieving a Greater Sense of Shared Responsibility for Tackling Neglect.
