Reoffending target to be raised despite YOT funding uncertainty

1 min read Youth Justice
The Ministry of Justice is considering doubling its target to cut youth reoffending, despite fears the existing target may not be met and amid warnings many youth offending teams are in "serious difficulties".

In August the Youth Justice Board's annual report said the current goal - to reduce youth reoffending by five per cent by March 2008 - was "at risk" of not being met.

However, youth justice minister David Hanson has told an Association of Chief Police Officers conference he wants to increase the target to 10 per cent by 2012. He argued the key to tackling reoffending was a co-ordinated approach addressing the core issues that cause crime, such as social exclusion, poor housing and education problems.

"The work we're doing with the Department for Children, Schools and Families focuses on how we match tackling the social exclusion agenda with preventing reoffending," he said.
