The new clubs were announced last week after Home Office minister John Denham met youth leaders as well as local MP Khalid Mahmood and Albert Bore, leader of Birmingham City Council, to work out how the Government's gun crime strategy can be implemented in Aston.
However, Aston Pride, the initiative set up in April 2001 under the Government's New Deal initiative to administer the 54m fund, has come in for intense local criticism over the time taken to release funds to projects. Regeneration minister Tony McNulty has given Aston Pride until May to begin spending the money or risk losing it.
