Recession threat to Building Schools

1 min read Education
The organisation responsible for co-ordinating the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme insists that it is "business as usual" despite claims by a committee of MPs that the initiative is being jeopardised by the recession.

A report published by the House of Commons, Children, Schools and Families Committee last week (7 January) examined expenditure by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

It said that the current economic climate meant the "private sector may be far less willing to enter into private finance initiative (PFI) agreements in connection with the Building Schools for the Future programme".

It added: "Serious economic problems could undermine investment in education and related services and could prevent the government from achieving its objectives."

The report also said that the review of BSF - which is being undertaken as part of the government's cash-saving initiative the Public Value Programme - could result in the scheme being "curtailed".
