Rathbone

1 min read
An educational charity.

 - What is Rathbone?

Rathbone is a charity born out of the work of the Rathbone family, specifically Elfrida Rathbone, who started a kindergarten in 1916 for children considered to be incapable of learning. It developed to include an occupational centre for children excluded from schools and creche facilities for women with mental and physical disabilities. This led to the founding of the Rathbone Society in 1969. Today, called simply Rathbone, the charity trains and educates more than 10,000 children, young people and adults every year.

- What does Rathbone do now?

The "all children can learn" ethos remains, with courses run in four areas: Youth Choices, which targets 14- to 16-year-olds who have experienced difficulties in mainstream education; Youth Engagement programmes for 14- to 19-year-olds not in education, employment or training; Preparation for Life and Work programmes, which target 16- to 19-year-olds not ready to access work or study; and apprenticeships in fields such as childcare and motor maintenance.
