While asleep, the body goes through different sleep stages in a cycle that lasts around 90 minutes. Newborn babies can sleep for 16 hours a day, while school-age children need an average of 10 hours sleep
Without enough sleep, a person may not be able to function normally during the day, leaving them irritable and finding it difficult to concentrate. Last month, the Sleep Council published research showing that the majority of people believe children should be taught about the importance of a good night's sleep
Sleep experts say young people today are sleeping less than ever before. They say physiological changes, social pressures and factors such as TVs and other technological gadgets in the bedroom contribute to late nights and mood swings.
