The three-year strategy will initially be implemented in secondary schools, where there is likely to be greater need, and where formal counselling is expected to have the most impact. It will focus on developing one-to-one counselling services carried out by a professional counsellor. Counselling for pupils in their final year at primary school is also being considered as a way to support them in the transition to secondary school.
Hutt said she wanted to see professional counsellors who specialise in working with children helping them cope with the problems that can affect them as they grow up, ranging from bullying to bereavement.
