Public Health: PCT spearheads to get extra funding

The 88 primary care trusts that will spearhead initiatives to boost the number of school nurses and uptake of healthy schools programmes will receive funds to roll out their work as part of their annual allocations.

The trusts, which have the worst health and deprivation indicators, will be the first to receive extra funding for health initiatives announced in the public health white paper (Children Now, 17-23 November).

The Department of Health said the trusts would be invited to attend a series of conferences that would outline the Government's position in more detail.

Wendy Meston, assistant director of public health at Rochdale primary care trust, one of the spearhead group, said most of the white paper would "give an additional focus" to initiatives that were already under way.
