Providers slam Rose proposals

Early Years Education
Early years providers have criticised Sir Jim Rose's review of primary education, claiming it has exacerbated the problems they face when parents move children into school-based nurseries in a bid to secure a school place.

Last month's interim report recommended that "entry into reception class in the September immediately following a child's fourth birthday should become the norm".

One provider in Kent told CYP Now that occupancy levels have suffered as a result and that she expects to lose 50 per cent of her pre-school class in September.

Sally Orr, head of early years in Hertfordshire, said: "Providers are concerned. Parents will feel that early admission gives them a better chance of securing a school place. If providers lose older children a term or two earlier it will leave gaps in occupancy."

The final report of the Rose review is due in March.
