Project's healthy success helps shape guidelines

The success of a project that took its first forays into health as a pilot on the 6m Department of Health-funded Young People's Development Programme has helped shape Good Practice Guidelines for Healthy Youth Work, launched recently by the Youth Work for Health team (YW4H) at The National Youth Agency.

With the help and support of YW4H, Motorvations, in Havering, Essex, actively embraced healthy youth work as an essential part of an alternative education programme delivered to "at-risk" young people aged 13 to 17. It now offers: sexual health; a c-card condom scheme; smoking cessation; and education sessions on alcohol and substance use. Young people access a nutrition centre for healthy eating options and an on-site fitness centre for personal fitness plans and health assessments. www.motorvations.net.
