PROJECT NOTES: What it is - Roof of Africa, Bradford Youth Service

1 min read

Funding: Each member of the group raised more than 1,000 each over 16 weeks, the total of which was matched by local business and charities to raise 40,000

Climbing: Ben Nevis is a significant enough challenge for anyone, but for 15 young people from Bradford, this was the first of many challenges.

The Roof of Africa project was created in May 2002 to encourage community cohesion in Bradford, which saw racially motivated riots in 2001.

Nazaket Ali, senior youth worker at Bradford Youth Service, said: "It involved people from all over Bradford, including white housing estates and rural areas."

The entire group, along with four project workers, spent the best part of nine months climbing mountains in the UK, including Scotland's Ben Nevis, in preparation for a final trip to Kenya and an excursion across Mount Kilimanjaro.
