Goals: To work with Black and dual-heritage Caribbean young people to research reasons for their peers' underachievement in schools, employment and training
Funding: A grant of 17,000 from Connexions Leicestershire
The general underachievement of young people from Black and dual-heritage Caribbean backgrounds in education and employment has been well documented.
This project, commissioned by Connexions Leicestershire's equality and diversity working group, aims to find out why, by training young people from these communities to carry out peer research themselves.
About 12 young people aged 16 to 19, who had been classified as "not in education, employment or training", were trained in research and interviewing skills and confidence-building. They interviewed 80 people from the same age group and came up with questions, designed questionnaires and carried out the research.
