Private sector staff better qualified

Early Years
Almost 10 times more staff in the private day care sector have the highest level of childcare qualifications than in local authorities.

Figures from the Childcare and Early Years Providers survey disclosed to the House of Commons last week, showed there are 1,300 council staff with a Level 4 or above qualification compared with 11,700 in the private sector.

But Dwynwen Stepien, head of the Local Authority Early Years Network, said that local authorities only contribute 10-15 per cent of all childcare provision. If this is viewed proportionally "you'll see that they actually have a higher percentage of Level 4 or above qualified providers than the private sector do," he said.
