Workforce: Funding is needed for graduate staff

There must be ongoing funding for childcare settings to help them accommodate staff taking new high-level childcare qualifications, according to research issued last week.

An evaluation of the Early Years Sector Endorsed Foundation Degree foundchildcare providers went to great lengths to support staff taking thequalification. But it was a financial and logistical burden especiallyfor small private providers and those offering sessional childcare, saidthe NatCen report.

The foundation degree is a Level 5 qualification. The Government issubsiding graduate training through its Transformation Fund but has alsopromised to support staff to get Level 3 to 5 qualifications.

A second NatCen evaluation looked at students' views and experience. They praised the teaching but said some college-based elements weredisorganised.

Students said doing the qualification had helped them develop aspractitioners by boosting their confidence and self-worth. But few saidit had led to more pay or a promotion.
