Private fostering: Carers must alert local authorities

Private fosterers need to be encouraged to tell local authorities of the arrangement if children's welfare is to be protected.

This is the main finding from Raising Awareness of Private Fostering, asurvey released this week by the British Association for Adoption &Fostering.

The report also concluded that many private fosterers did not know whatthe term meant.

"There is a widespread lack of understanding about what privatefostering actually entails," said Felicity Collier, chief executive ofthe British Association for Adoption & Fostering.

"We believe that at least 15,000 children in the UK - half of whom wethink are Black African - are being privately fostered.

"We also guess that only 2,000 of them have been alerted to their localauthority, which has a duty to visit them and ensure their safety," sheadded.
