Private foster care: Children ask for placement checks

Children in private foster placements think social services should check to ensure they're safe, says a consultation on changes proposed by the Government.

Every child consulted by Dr Roger Morgan, children's rights director at the Commission for Social Care Inspection, thought visits to private foster homes by social workers was one of the best ways to do this.

Many also thought talking to a privately fostered child "somewhere away from the carers' house" was important to make sure they could speak freely.

The Government is proposing to bring in standards for what should happen in private foster care. Suggestions on what these rules should include "give the child the same food as your own children".
