Prison Services: Family contact needs leadership

Family contact services for prisoners need leadership from the Government if they are to be effective, a campaigner has said.

Lucy Gampell, director of Action for Prisoners' Families, said prisoners should not have to rely on the commitment of individual officers or governors, or funding from voluntary organisations, to have proper contact with other family members.

She was speaking after the chief inspector of prisons, Anne Owers, highlighted in her annual report that family contact and support in prisons was "inconsistent".

Owers said there should be officers specifically tasked to liaise with families, particularly in women's prisons.
