Primary school: Older starting age recommended

A Liberal Democrat policy commission is likely to recommend that children start primary school later, Children Now can reveal.

The Liberal Democrats' 4Rs Commission was set up by the party'seducation spokeswoman Sarah Teather and is charged with developing newpolicies on primary education.

Children Now understands that the commission is likely to back the ideaof children starting primary school later, possibly at the age of six orseven. The commission regards the idea as a key part of its wider visionof education being about developing the whole person rather than justpriming children for work.

The commission is also investigating the media's influence on children'sspeech. Its final report is due out next spring.
