Pre-budget statement: Brown set to spend 53m on families

Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced that he will spend 53m services for families and children over the next two years.

In his pre-budget report Brown outlined plans to pilot peer mentoringschemes in 180 secondary schools and a mentoring scheme for 600looked-after children.

The Treasury also published Support for Parents, a report assessingprogress made since 1997 in reforming children's services.
