Youth Justice Board (YJB) figures showing the number of custodial sentences in relation to total youth court convictions in 2007/08 reveal large variations in parts of England and Wales in terms of proportions being sent to custody.

Merthyr Tydfil in Wales tops the table, with 12.6 per cent of those convicted of an offence being sentenced to custody. Other areas with high proportions include Liverpool, Ealing, Leeds, Thurrock and Wokingham, all sentencing more than 10 per cent of those convicted to custody.
