Variation in custody levels continues despite overall fall

New figures have cast a spotlight on varying youth custody rates across England and Wales as the government prepares to roll out pilot schemes to devolve the cost of custody to local authorities.

Statistics showing the number of custodial sentences handed out in relation to the total number of convictions in youth courts in 2009/10 show that in some authorities the ratio has improved, while in others it has got worse.

Nationally, there has been a 24 per cent drop in the number of custodial sentences handed out to children, largely down to a fall in the number of children appearing in court, although in some areas the figure has gone up.

In Northamptonshire, Swansea, Sutton and Wokingham the number of custodial sentences in 2009/10 was less than a quarter of those the previous year.
